If you want to know the reality of that, I suggest you watch the recent, eye-opening, secretly filmed Four Corners investigation into Australia’s offshore processing facilites.

On what level does this policy make sense? Someone arrives here and claims asylum and we decide to ship them off to somewhere like Manus Island or Nauru for processing? It’s expensive, inhumane and basically outsources our obligations under international treaties. How long is it until we decide it’d just be easier to shoot anyone non-white who tries to come here?

What would you like to do next?

I have so many things I’d like to do, so many people I’d like to work with, but I’ve found it’s always a good idea to keep the page blank. Something great always comes out of nowhere and surprises me. And hopefully it’ll surprise the audience too. I am always curious about stepping into new territory. It’s good to keep expanding one’s horizons, in any walk of life, never mind as an actor. I’ve never done a thriller, the genre of some of my favourite films. And I’ve never done a comedy, which I would love to do. Something warm and silly, in the spirit of my heroes like Bill Murray, Jack Lemmon, and Gene Wilder. I’d love to do a western too, which may seem unlikely, but once upon a time I wasn’t a likely candidate for Loki either. Then there are some directors on everybody’s wish list: Christopher Nolan, the Coen Brothers, Terrence Malick, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Steve McQueen. This lady was such a badass, I can’t count the ways, but let’s try.

She got married to an already successful pirate, Zheng Yi, and took over when he died. Fuck, if you had consensual sex while on duty you got your head chopped off and the woman was chucked off the boat no matter where they were at. Ching wasn’t fucking around, and she wanted to make damn sure you weren’t fucking around when you should have been working.

Two years after she took over, she got so notorious for ransacking towns and taking taxes on them that she pissed off the entire Chinese government, and sent out a massive fleet to bring her in line. Most pirates probably would’ve said this was out of their pay grade and taken off to hide out or ransack some other country.

Finally the government gave up and offered her amnesty as well as amnesty for her then SEVENTEEN THOUSAND crewman. Ching Shih got to keep all her plunder, so she retired to the countryside where she opened up a brothel and lived until she was 69.
